PREMISE

WHAT IS THIS GAME ABOUT
The Quiet Place is a panfandom survival game with adult themes and graphic content that is centered around the a small community built in what's left of Reims, France. Characters live, work, and protect themselves from a threat which responds to all forms of sound.

ARRIVAL
You wake, standing. A thick, muddy red dust coats your skin and clothes - it sticks to your tongue and blocks your vision. Inhale and it chokes you, exhale and your breath puffs out in front of your face in a transparent maroon cloud. It tastes of copper, tangy and harsh. Movement is difficult, every limb tingles and aches. Look to your left, your right. Evenly spaced in each direction stands another person indistinguishable in every way from the next. A pinprick of light blooms ahead and grows steadily larger; a door has opened.

Hands grip your wrists, push at the small of your back and guide you out of the darkness into a room with four walls and a thin, sagging ceiling. The plaster is peeling, the air is musty, and the floor is slick. White plastic piping juts up from the center and curves into multiple spouts, clean water flowing in uneven streams. Those hands pull your clothes off and clear the dust from your body, redress you in handsewn jumpsuits.

A finger is pressed to your lips. Kind eyes meet your own and a single word is whispered - hush.

Characters would be stuck in the room until they agree. They're allowed to discuss things in that room with other characters or npcs/mods, until they make a decision, but if they choose not to move forward silently, they would have to stay. So your character can go immediately, wait a day, a week, a month - whatever you'd want to play out. If they go out and make noise, the natives get involved and that's another aspect of the game that players can do something with if they choose to! Characters are allowed to claim a room in one of the houses. If the home is established, people already living there, then the communal areas will be set up. If it is a new residence, then characters will have to furnish communal areas the first month. All rooms are empty when claimed.

ARE CHARACTERS ALIVE OR DEAD
Characters are alive. If your character died in canon, they come into the game alive. If your character is something considered 'undead' like a vampire or zombie, they'll come into the game in that state.

NOISE LEVELS
When it comes to sound, anything can attract a Sound Eater. Even the slightest hint of noise could, but that doesn't mean a sound eater heard it. To allow characters to be able to interact fully in the setting, sometimes they might be heard and sometimes they won't (unless they are extremely noisy). Even the natives slip up and make noise once in a while. If you want your character to get away with small things once in a while, that's completely okay! If you want them heard so that they get caught by either natives or the sound eaters, that's okay too!

The community is safer because it has been carefully arranged to keep noise levels down. Leaving means risking making noise. Out there, they’ll hear you and you’ll risk dying ( a room reset ). Everything in the game that needs done has to be completed without making noise. This means that characters have to get creative or be extremely careful, which might mean that a task that could take ten minutes might take hours. The natives only use tools that will not make sound; no drills or hammers, things like that. They use old fashioned methods for soundproofing. Clay mixtures and materials to pack walls and cracks, that sort of stuff. Each character will have to figure out ways to be quiet and if they come up with something good, they can share the method with everyone!

What about natural sounds? The natives have techniques to help with that. They also have.. selective diets so as to not cause a lot of other unwanted sounds. It's not foolproof but they try to be quiet. Nobody wants to be reset because they sneezed.

Some sound might pass unnoticed and some won’t. But too much and we ask that you get your character caught to stick within the game setting.

TRANSPORTATION
Currently, transportation is limited to walking and bikes. Bicycles have to be maintained so that they don't make any noise but they are allowed to be used. If a character can make a soundless car... soundlessly, they are allowed to do so.

FLORA AND FAUNA
There aren’t many animals; only deer, rabbits, and fish. Fauna can be learned more about if any materials, like books, were found at the library. There aren’t any insects.

TECHNOLOGY
While Reims was modern before everything ended, technology is limited to what the natives have the knowledge to fix and use. The devices are the main source of communication, so they are constantly updated and fixed; they require a username, which is a section on the application. The username will show other characters a picture and name as well. Solar-powered panels are used for electricity, but only for necessary usage - to heat water in houses, keep fridges working, etc. At night, electricity is only used for the smallest amount of lighting. Developments in soundless technology is encouraged, but as of yet, the natives don't have the expertise to progress.

DEVICES
Looking like a more modern phone, they show the month and day but no year, which corresponds to us OOCly. They work like normal phones, so characters can text back and forth. There’s also sign language detection where it can interpret the signals and send out the translation in the device. Your character can type a response and the hand signals would play out for the other person or as a text. Each device learns the person's preferences and when two devices are close, they sync to allow for that. If a character were to break the device and can't put it back together, the natives will make them wait at least a week before giving them a replacement. If they break that one, they'd make them wait two weeks and so on. The devices are very advanced, where not much else in the community is. They put a lot of effort into making communication easier so it would pick up Japanese characters and translate to others. They can type messages and show one another and the devices will know to translate to the language of the reader - sort of like if two people are standing there, their devices sync up to help. The devices can be set up for new arrivals!

Each device is set up when a character comes into game. They are allowed to input any name and picture as their own and it can't be changed in the future. Characters can be extremely detailed and put name, pic, age, housing, or it can be the bare minimum of name and picture. Characters can lie about their names - but if you choose this, you have to be sure to note it in your post that your character's name is coming up as something other than what can be reasonably found on the character journal.

ARE THERE NPCs
There are. The community is filled with families, couples, and individuals that do their best to coexist. It's easy to see when they're met that they are frightened of any and all sound. They'll hear, they will tell you and their fear is expressed through facial expression and body language. NPCs aren't currently being played by mods or helper mods, but they might in the future if an event occurs that requires it!

THE NATIVES
When the natives die, they stay dead; some arrivals are reset and some die as well. Those that had survived have moved on. The natives have survived for generations and don’t remember a time that wasn’t like this. They don't know how the reset room works. They do not have any justice system as they haven't fought amongst themselves, the threat is outside their community. If anyone commits a murder, and after that character is reset, they would give the murdered victim the right to kill the other person. If they want. The natives believe a person may or may not be reset, they don't usually - hence the fear, but some of the arrivals have. All of the natives in the community work together to survive. They don't have a leader, but the woman who explains the devices is the 'go-to' or speaker for the community.

THE COMMUNITY
Houses are empty when arrivals first come in but furniture and supplies can be gathered from other houses to set up rooms to be as comfortable as possible. Plumbing does work but the natives choose not to use it. They bathe outside carefully, using buckets and clothes. They relieve themselves outside, as well - outhouses. The fireplaces work, but they do not use them. The arrivals can use the plumbing if they can figure out how to make it so that the water doesn’t make noise. The same for fireplaces and other fixtures in the houses. The natives simply choose not to use most items.

Power comes from the solar panels installed on the room. The refrigerators and lights work, but a native will turn something off if they come by and it’s not necessarily needed - don’t leave the lights on.

SOUND EATERS
The Sound Eaters are too many to count; they cover the world and are more numerous in some areas over others. The natives aren’t aware of how to kill them. They are too afraid to test any theories. They will do anything that they have to do in order to remain quiet. (With children, they’ll place a hand over their mouth or other, more extreme, methods). The Sound Eaters appeared around the same time as the Reset Rooms, though the natives don’t know which came first. They have never been seen up close, as they kill so swiftly that the person is either permanently dead or wakes up in the reset room.

Sound Eaters come in three varieties, the Young, Shifting, and Matured. The Matured are the leaders, more intelligent and calculated. The Shifting are in a constant state of transformation between one and the other. And the Young look more human, though aggressive and violent at all times. If at the right place at the right time, it is possible to see one of the Young alone and fight it. Attacking it can cause injury to the Sound Eater, but the moment they're in distress, other Sound Eaters will be there. This would give characters a very short amount of time to get away before the others attack and characters are Reset.

Recording Sound Eaters is tricky. The equipment sometimes malfunctions, too much red dust, but it can happen - more likely near their nest. The same with taking photos. As time moves forward, oddly enough, the likeliness of capturing video/photo proof of the Sound Eaters is higher.

CURRENCY
Trade and barter. If you want a new pair of socks and have a spare jar of apples - trade for it. The community relies heavily on one another. The native in town that bakes fresh bread will trade a loaf for something of equal value. Have a toothache? Someone in the community will have that skill and you can pay for it with what you have.

CLOTHES
Each character is given a jumpsuit - they are all kinds of colors, you can decide!

JOBS/BUSINESSES/HOUSING
Jobs are assigned during the application process. Characters spend the first part of every day (Sunday is the exception as everyone meets at the town hall) doing their assigned job. The second half of the day is spent completing 'Quiet Maintenance', which is the process of checking the community for any sound issues. Businesses are usually ran out of homes but characters are allowed to get buildings, soundproof them, and then start up a business. Shared housing is available in two separate homes when characters enter the game. They're allowed to upgrade through the reward system at any time.

What if my character doesn’t do their job? At this time, nothing, but in the future there might be consequences!

Can a character have more than one job listed? A character can have as many jobs as they can handle.

What all does full time quiet-maintenance detail? Quiet maintenance ranges. It can be replacing soundproofing materials that are falling apart or wearing away - such as the inside of houses along walls. It might be coming up with an idea to replace something that has the potential to be noisy with something less so. Or even finding a way to make it so that a person can take a shower without the water making noise. It's really up to each player to think of how they could make things more quiet.

A cleaner would help keep the community neat and tidy - pick up debris of any kind, clean houses, anything like that.

Teachers can teach any subject that they are knowledgeable in. This can be to children or adults. It's basically the passing of knowledge and skill, since a lot of society in game only learns what their parents/neighbors can teach them. If your character can pass on a good skill, then set up a class or meeting of some kind or even do one on one. You can say they've been working with NPC adult and children as well!

LANGUAGE BARRIERS
Language barriers are common but the devices help with that. Verbal speech isn't often used as it's dangerous, but everyone comes into the game 'knowing' the same language. When it comes to hand and body communication, similar to sign language, characters will have to use their devices to translate or spend their Sundays learning it. While it is easy to pickup, it will take a character four Sundays to become passable. The language barrier is mostly due to the fact that people can't speak aloud, but with a little effort, it's an obstacle that won't take long to tackle.

ITEMS FROM HOME
Characters come in with only their clothes and can earn items from home through the activity rewards system.

When a character arrives, they are disoriented and need help from the natives. They'll change them out of their original clothes, clean them up, and then help them dress in clothing that doesn't make any sound. They’ll keep the original clothing until it’s soundproofed ICly and OOCly you would get it back through activity, if you want to do so. Small items like rings and necklaces, that don’t make sound, would be left with the character. If the item is bonded with their soul it would need mentioned on the app and when they get in game it would be kept with the character. This is so that all characters start as evenly as possible when it comes to material objects.

SETTING/LOCATIONS
Separate pages are up for setting and locations and for housing.

EVENTS AND PLOT
When characters get into game, a survival driven arrival log will go up. It will give characters the chance to settle into game and get to know one another. At various times during the month going forward, a mod log will go up with an 'event'. The themes will range and may include horror, survival, sex, slice of life, humor, and more. Exploration of the city will be a huge plot point as the game progresses.

TIME
The Quiet Place has a 1:1 ratio and follows the schedule of current time, EST.

ACTIVITY SYSTEM
When the activity check goes up at the beginning of the month, each player must provide the following:
- Ten Comments from your character.
These can be from one or two threads and must have taken place during the month the check is for. Below are rules for our reward system.

Silence System

Going with the premise of the game, a character remaining quiet and as soundless as possible is key to survival. ICly the natives reward these actions by obtaining the things that characters want or need that aren't 'necessary'. If you are quiet, then they stay safe. The natives don't know, or they aren't saying, why people and items appear in that room, but they will clean them and bring them to the center of the community. All items that are requested will be left there - you can decide whether your character or someone else's character snaps it up and claims it as their own.

Cashing in points is simple - one tag where your character is silent is worth one point;
1 to 1. If they make no noise, you can cash it in and then exchange those points for rewards. To claim a reward you respond to the activity check when it goes up. There will be a static spot for your character with a point calculating section in a form to make things easier. It’s not mandatory to keep track.

The natives don't have enhanced hearing, they're just extremely perceptive to noise after going so long without it. They wouldn't be able to hear everything. The soundproofing is a precautionary measure in case someone accidentally makes noise. If someone is whispering in a soundproofed house and you decide no natives are around, they wouldn't be heard, but if it's outside or natives are nearby, that's a different story. Any noise can have IC consequences, but it all depends on how you want to play it out and if there is anything going on in the game at that time.

During AC, the post will allow each character to have a static comment. The player will put the character name and each month, during Activity, they will use the form to respond. The form will have a section to link any threads that are being cashed in for points (threads can be cashed in during any activity check). The mod will tell the player how many points that they got for them, but it will be one point per ‘soundless’ tag. The player can also request reward items during that time and the total cost will come out of their point total. Since the post won’t change, the player can come back to it each month without having to worry about recalculating.

All forms of tags can earn points, as long as they weren’t making noise. If something or someone else in the tag was noisy it doesn't effect the player who wasn't - they can still claim the tags. It doesn't matter if the character is in a soundproofed area or not. If they are purposefully making noise then the tag won't count.

POWERS AND ABILITIES
Characters are allowed to app in with their powers and abilities. The only aspects that will be nerfed are anything that make sound or are game breaking - all of which should be noted in the application.

On the application, there is a section for powers and we ask that you be as detailed as you can be. Characters will only have the abilities that are mentioned on the app. They will only be nerfed if they make sounds or break the game. Examples of the latter could be if a character can fly, their ability would cease working at certain points in the city. If they can cast spells, they wouldn't be able to do anything as large as a soundproof bubble over the area, but they could stop a chair from squeaking. We won't take powers away, just limit them to help them fit in the environment. During the application process, we'll go through that section carefully and any nerfing will be mentioned in the notice we respond with.

Mental communication is allowed! It's not physical sound so it won't be 'heard'.

DEATHS
If a character dies in game they will disappear and wake up in the room they started in. Their memories will be hazy and slowly return to them over the span of a few days to a week. The only way that there would be anyone to see what happened and actually know that they 'vanished', is if they died an absolutely silent death. If that does happen, the other character(s) will go through a few minutes of confusion and disorientation - neither seeing the body vanish or any Sound Eaters up close, depending on the situation. Characters will be healed or restored to as they were before they were injured after waking up.

The natives will bury an unreset body outside of the community. Death in the game, unless specified in a certain way in an event, is largely up to each player. We're not going to keep track of each room reset or ask that players come to us every time. If you want to kill your character off, go for it! Basically, the sound eaters or the natives might hear your character if they make a little noise or they might not. If it's a lot of noise or very loud, then they couldn't logistically get away with that. The only time a mod might get involved is if a player was causing a ton of natives to get killed - since they can't be reset.

ROOM RESETS
As far as the natives have found, the new arrivals that come through have both been reset and not reset. It's never been one hundred percent either way. The natives have yet to have anyone reset after dying, which is why they're so afraid. Past new arrivals have stayed dead and be reset. Studying the room hasn't yielded any information as to how it functions or whether it can be made to do anything. When inside, it doesn't seem to be anything other than an empty room with a dirt floor.

IC AGING
Characters continue to age in game as they normally would. Bodies continue to develop - grey hair, etc. The only time this is not the case is when a pregnant woman is apped in; she will never become full-term. When a character dies and resets, they'd go back to the point in game when they were alive and well so their 'age' would not be affected.

DROPPED CHARACTERS
Characters that have idled out will have simply vanished. Players who drop officially can choose whether their character got sick, disappeared, or was killed. When the character is apped in by someone else, the character will have no knowledge of the previous version's time in game.

HIATUSES
Hiatuses are ICly handled as if the character fell ill and was taken to the room they woke up in. When the hiatus is over, their sickness will have passed and they may go back into the game setting as the player sees fit. Two weeks or longer get an AC exemption.

CANON UPDATES
Canon updates are ICly handled as if the character fell ill and was taken back to the room they woke up in. Natives do this because it's always been done. They don't understand or question the process. When the canon update is over, their sickness will have passed and they may go back into the game setting as the player sees fit.

APPABLE CHARACTERS
Canon, original, canon au, crau, and player-created protagonists. Types of characters allowed are not limited - humans, aliens, androids, vampires, etc are allowed. Pets can be earned through rewards but not brought in. Characters can't bring their children in with them at this time. Canon original characters are case by case - send us a pp if you're curious!

RESERVES
Found here.

- Reserves are open for one week prior to apps opening.
- They are not mandatory and expire three days after apps open.
- No app challenges.
- Two reserves per player.

AGE LIMITS
There are no age restrictions on characters but all players must be over 18.

NUMBER OF CHARACTERS
Players can play two characters in the game at once and they can be apped in at the same time or during different application cycles. More characters are subject to proof of high activity levels. If a player is interested then please send the links to your current character’s AC posts for the mods to look over.

NEW CANONS
All new material has a one week waiting time. That's for movies, shows, comics, etc. This is shorter than most, but we only ask our players to be respectful of those who don't want spoilers. Put a post on your journal or ask, if you choose to app in someone from something newly released.

REAPPS
If you fail AC you may reapp through the application page at any time. You must supply one new sample.

GRAPHIC CONTENT
This game will touch on many different topics, some of which will delve into triggery material. Examples of content that could occur are death, murder, implied suicide, blood, violence, body horror, vivid and brutal realistic acts, sex, betrayal, manipulation, mind games, and more. 18 and older.

GAME TIME SCHEDULE
The game runs on an EST time schedule. When something is opening it's 12:00 am EST and when something is closing it's 11:59 pm EST of the date listed.

IC INFORMATION SECTION
The following linked posts are to information that each character can access through their device at any time and is considered to be IC information.

Community Bulletin Board

This is managed by one of the natives and can be accessed either through that person ICly or the device. The sections marked as A monthly Summary are for characters as well, except for the posts marked as OOC. Those are so that the players and mods can have all that info in one handy spot. If it is an IC log or network post then players can read it and act as if their character read the 'rundown' that the native input about what happened in each post. All posts made by characters are handled as if they are IC as well - they let the native know and he updated the bulletin board. This is meant to keep IC access to information fair and open!

The map on the setting page is IC information that can be pulled up on the devices. It is listed as Reims and all maps/signs/info found in game will say Reims - it is in fact Rouen with a few extras tossed in.

beguiledcard: (admits to every little flaw)

Hello, mods! I have a few questions for you, and one of them is incredibly long, so I apologize in advance.

1. Someone asked me about this, and I didn't have an answer, and couldn't remember seeing anything about it. I apologize if I overlooked something! But, it says that players can cash in threads for points and claim rewards during any open activity period, and I want to confirm what I'm interpreting that as.

Does it mean, as an example, that we could make a subtread for April at this point - then, regardless of whether or not we have AC yet for this month, tally up points for rewards?

And, if that's correct, would it be best to just modify the form to only have silent points (since we wouldn't be able to edit the comment once you guys commented back)?

Sorry if I'm overthinking it, but I prefer to keep this as organized as possible for you guys, as well as myself, l-lol.

2. I remember seeing a mention of soundproofing materials needing to be gained mainly through the silent system. I've been having it so Akira works with Noël Christenbell, as well as a few others, to create tools and materials for this sort of thing (which is how he managed to get the magic healing clinic full-on soundproof status).

Would this suffice (since I did think on it, and I realized some bigger items would prooobably need to be used, since a simple bag wouldn't be enough for those), or would you guys like me to use up some silence points to make up the difference in the bigger materials that were likely needed?

( I will use a separate comment for the last question, since it requires an incredibly lengthy explanation, and might take more time for you guys to answer. )
beguiledcard: (waiting for the go - for the big show)

[personal profile] beguiledcard 2018-04-02 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
All right! Regarding the points, that sounds perfectly fair, and makes much more sense to me.

So that I'm sure I have a remotely realistic view on this, since Noël is able to poof most things into reality with a reasonably-sized bag, would it be a fair stretch to say him + help of others made it possible to ~60% soundproof the clinic (since it wasn't in the best condition)?

In my head it would make sense that a full 40% needed to be done with incredibly large objects, and therefore would have been entirely through regains.

And, for the sake of saving a comment on my AC thread (and for having this where others can see)--

Would 50 points be a fair amount for 40%-worth of materials (I'm trying to gauge using "Large Item" and "Private House" as guides)?

Excellent! Thanks, guys!
